Tax Director or Senior Manager

Essential Functions:
  • Perform technical tax review and approval of all tax returns and governmental tax examinations of any complexity.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in discipline or industry.
  • Demonstrate excellence in the most advanced technical skills.
  • Oversee client service tasks, ensuring assignments are completed within budgeted time.
  • Assume full responsibility for larger tax returns and delegate to various tax preparers as necessary.
  • Delegate and manage tax research projects for an accurate and efficient product.
  • Actively participate in client meetings and tax planning efforts to assist the A&A Department with larger clients.
  • Act as a resource for tax preparers/specialists and A&A staff on specific tax issues and/or questions.
  • Assume tax preparation responsibility for more complex business returns.
  • Assume client service responsibility for clients the Tax Senior Manager works directly with or those delegated from the Partner.
  • Communicate important tax and tax developments affecting the firm's clients to appropriate personnel.
  • Delegate and manage governmental tax examinations; may represent the client before taxing authorities.
  • Maintain familiarity with qualifications of all tax staff members; review staff assignments for appropriateness.
  • Supervise tax staff and provide on-the-job training.
  • Work to develop responsible, trained staff by assisting in recruiting, performance evaluations, development training aids, and acting as an instructor in professional development programs.
  • Assume responsibility for smooth flow of tax returns through the tax preparation system to ensure accurate, complete, and timely preparation and delivery of all clients’ tax returns.
  • Ensure accurate and timely billing and collection processes.
  • Possess a complete knowledge of the firm's philosophy and its opinions on tax matters.
  • Maintain knowledge of general economic and political trends of possible tax or other legislation that could affect the business climate.
Nonessential Functions:
  • Prepare other reports and projects as requested by partners.
  • Research and evaluate tax preparation and tax research software for recommendation to partners.
  • Participate in firm practice development efforts through involvement with referral sources, community, and industry activities.
  • Promote the most efficient operations of the Firm and support compliance guidelines in managing others.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current tax laws. Prefer experience with both SEC and privately held clients from numerous industries, including complex tax provision experience.
  • Proficiency in using computer tax preparation, tax research, and tax planning software programs.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities to prioritize and meet deadlines efficiently and accurately.
  • Effective reasoning and critical thinking skills.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for the development, coaching, and training of senior, semi-seniors, and staff accountants.
  • Must be familiar with the qualifications of all Tax staff members for the development and instruction of their training needs.
  • Participate in reviews and evaluations of the tax department.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum of seven to ten years of experience in public accounting, demonstrating a proven progression in tax complexity, scope, and research.
  • At least two (2) years of experience representing clients before taxing authorities.
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience supervising and directing the work of tax preparers.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required, Master’s degree in taxation preferred.
  • Minimum of forty hours of continuing education is required each year to maintain and develop technical and business skills.
  • A current and valid certified public accountant’s license is required.
  • Must be a member in good standing with the American Institute of CPAs.
